• Revisional Surgery

    Revisional surgery is performed in cases where people who have undergone surgery for obesity have lost insufficient weight, regained weight, lost excessive weight, experienced torsion rotation) and stenosis. It is performed after surgery that was not performed properly and fundus resection was performed inadequately. In addition, the stomach may have been left large. In this case, revisional surgery is also applied.

    What is Revisional Surgery?
    Even if revisional surgery has been performed properly, there may still be no weight loss. In this case, it is used as an absorption-reducing method after sleeve gastrectomy. It is applied to patients with excessive reflux complaints after sleeve gastrectomy. In addition, RNY gastric bypass can be performed as a revisional surgical method for patients who have nutritional problems due to reasons such as torsion (rotation) and stenosis at the end of the stomach.

    Revisional Surgery Processes
    The revisional surgery process varies according to the revisional surgery area. First, it is determined whether the person is suitable to undergo surgery again. In suitable patients, it is discussed why the first surgery failed. It is determined whether the failure of the surgery is due to the patient or the operation. The psychological state of the patient is also important in this process. If stomach enlargement is experienced after the operation, there may be eating disorder due to stress.

    All these should be evaluated and then taken into surgery. If these conditions are determined, some examinations and tests are requested from the patient. Upper GI endoscopy, passage radiographs, blood tests, endoscopy, pulmonary function tests, anesthesia evaluation are checked. The day of surgery is decided and the patient is taken into surgery.

    Who Cannot Have Revisional Surgery?
    Revisional surgery may not be performed because a patient who has undergone obesity surgery is not suitable for another obesity surgery. The situations that are not suitable are as follows;

    • If the person is using substances,
    • Refused to take vitamins and nutritional support,
    • If an eating disorder has been identified,
    • If he/she suffers from reflux but does not want to take medical treatment
    • There are items that must be followed after the medical surgery procedure. If the person complies with these items, there is a 95% chance of reaching the desired weight.

    What are Revisional Surgery Methods?
    Revisional surgery is the procedure performed instead of renewing the surgery. The person may have chosen the wrong surgery or the surgery may not have been performed as desired. In this case, revisional surgery is used. Revisional surgery methods are as follows;

    Revisional surgery after gastric banding,
    In revision surgery of patients with gastric bypass, if the passage between the stomach and intestine widens, it is narrowed again through endoscopy,
    In the revisional surgery of patients who have undergone sleeve gastrectomy surgery, if the patient could not lose weight or if the stomach grew again, the sleeve gastrectomy procedure is repeated,
    Revisional surgery of duodenal switch operation,
    Revisional surgery of patients with transit bipartition surgery

    What are the Risks of Revisional Surgery?
    The risks of revisional surgery are higher than the first gastric surgery. The chance of bleeding or leakage is around 1-2% for an individual who has had his first obesity surgery. However, this rate increases to 3-4% for a person who has revisional surgery of this surgery. However, with the selection of a good specialist, the likelihood of risks is considerably reduced. The success rate in revision surgery is 96%. For this reason, it is important to be under constant examination and supervision both after bariatric surgery and when revisional surgery is applied in case of any problems.

    Revisional Surgery Recovery Process
    The healing process of revisional surgery is the same as the first surgery. The patient stays in the hospital for 2 or 3 days after surgery. During this period, the patient is observed and controls are provided to ensure that nothing goes wrong. After returning home, the patient should go to the doctor at the end of the first week. Afterwards, this process continues for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and once a year. If the person feels any discomfort, he/she should consult his/her doctor immediately.
